Chinese character TongBeijing Jiaotong University is one of the five Jiaotong (or Chiao-Tung) universities in China. The word "Jiaotong", which once simply meant "communications" in Chinese, has now already matured into the quintet's trademark of origin, history, quality and value.

Our international office has benefited enormously from this trademark effect and been enjoying active international involvement.

Fed Minister Hahn and President Ning[Sep. 25, 2009] Austrian Federal Minister of Science and Research unveils plaque for joint research center (Liu Rui reports)

A delegation led by H.E. Dr. Johannes Hahn, Federal Minister of Science and Research of Austria visited Beijing Jiaotong University. The delegation attended the Unveiling Ceremony for the China-Austria Center for Innovative Research in Logistics, Supply Chain Management and Material Flow.

The cooperation agreement of the Center was signed by President Ning Bin and Academician Xu Shoubo of Beijing Jiaotong University, Vice President Hans K. Kaiser of Vienna University of Technology, and President Brigitte Winklehner of Eurasia-Pacific UniNet.

H.E. Dr. Hahn and President Ning jointly unveiled the plaque for the Center, which symbolized the founding of the Center.

[Jul. 23, 2009] Nobel Laureate Barry Marshall speaks at BJTU (Liu Rui reports)

Prof. Marshall and VP WangProf. Barry Marshall, Nobel Laureate for Physiology or Medicine, visited BJTU and spoke to an audience of more than 300 faculty members and students of BJTU under the title "My Journey as A Nobel Scientist".

Prof. Barry Marshall completed his undergraduate medical degree at the University of Western Australia in 1974 and is currently a Senior Principal Research Fellow at the School of Biomedical, Biomolecular and Chemical Sciences at UWA, where he continues his landmark research in h.pylori, a gastrointestinal bacterium he discovered in 1982. His work has been acknowledged through the Nobel Prize for Physiology or Medicine he shares with Professor Robin Warren in 2005. Professor Marshall also runs a molecular biology laboratory at the University.

Vice President Wang Yongsheng met with Prof. Marshall and the delegation from the University of Western Australiaon behalf of BJTU. The delegation was led by Professor Bill Louden, Senior Deputy Vice-Chancellor of the UWA.

[Jul. 15, 2009] President Ning attends US Secretary of Energy Dr. Steven Chu's speech in Beijing (Liu Rui reports)

President Ning, President Gu of THU, Dr. C.N. Yang, and Dr. Steven ChuOn July 15, 2009, President Ning was invited to attend US Secretary of Energy Dr. Steven Chu's speech at Tsinghua University.

Dr. Steven Chu, world's renowned scientist and 1997 winner of Nobel Prize in Physics, became the 12th US Secretary of Energy in January 2009. As a scientist, Dr. Chu is known for his research in cooling and trapping of atoms with laser light, which won him the Nobel Prize.

The first biography of Dr. Chu in mainland China was published by Beijing Jiaotong University Press in 2006. The authors were BJTU Prof. Li Jianjun and his wife Cao Hui. In April 2009, the biography's 2nd edition was also published.

In his speech at Tsinghua University, Secretary Chu addressed the environmental and climate issues from the perspective of energy and concluded that China and US should work together on the research and development of alternative and renewable energy.

President Ning and Secretary Chu met during lunch and exchanged ideas on a Chinese university's role in the China-US energy cooperation framework and the recent development of BJTU's energy programs, such as wind power and electric car. Secretary Chu also appreciated BJTU's efforts in the publication of his biography.

[Jun. 14, 2009] President Ning speaks on Sino-Spanish University Presidents Forum, VP Chen signs Consortium Agreement (Liu Rui reports)

President Ning speaks on the ForumOn June 14, 2009, President Ning Bin attended the Sino-Spanish University Presidents Forum held in Beijing. The Forum was attended by 5 Spanish universities and 10 Chinese universities.

President Ning presented Plenary Session 1 speech titled "Integrate Strengths in the Industry, Build Win-Win Relationship among Multiple Partners". President Ning pointed out that, international cooperation is essential for building a first-rate university; a university’s strengths and characteristics are the foundation for international cooperation; the fast development of high-speed railway provides opportunity for Sino-Spanish cooperation; Chinese and Spanish universities should promote in-depth cooperation, emphasize concrete results, and build win-win relationship.

On behalf of Beijing Jiaotong University, Vice President Chen Feng signed the Agreement on University Consortium between Chinese Universities and Spanish Universities. The Agreement marks the transtion from the traditional two-party exchange and cooperation towards the strength-plus-strength multilateral cooperation between Chinese and Spanish Universities.

[Jun. 9, 2009] BJTU signs cooperation agreements with Umm Al-Qura University, Saudi Arabia (Liu Rui reports)

Rector Abulfaraj, Minister Zhou, Minister Al-Ankary, VP ChenOn June 9, 2009, Vice President Chen Feng attended the China-Saudi Arabia Higher Educational Cooperation Ceremony. At the Ceremony, Chinese Minister of Education Zhou Ji and Saudi Arabian Minister of Higher Education Khalid Mohammed Al-Ankary met to witness the milestone achievement of higher educational cooperation between the two countries.

7 Saudi Araibian universities and 10 Chinese universities signed in total 13 agreements on language and culture exchanges, science and technology cooperation, and talent fostering, respectively.

On behalf of Beijing Jiaotong University, Vice President Chen Feng signed 2 agreements with Rector Waleed H. Abulfaraj of Umm Al-Qura University for both general cooperation and specific cooperation in Transportation Management.

[Feb. 3, 2009] Spring Festival celebrated at the Confucius Institute in Leuven, Belgium (Liu Rui reports)

Ambassador Zhang YuanyuanOn February 3, 2009, the joint Confucius Institute of Beijing Jiaotong University and GROUP T International University College Leuven hosted the Spring Festival Evening in Leuven, Belgium. The event was co-organized by the Chinese Students and Scholars Association in Leuven. H.E. Mr. Zhang Yuanyuan, Ambassador of the PRC to the Kingdom of Belgium, Dr. Johan De Graeve, President of GROUP T and Chairman of the joint Confucius Institute, Dr. Matinus Buckers, Vice Rector of KU Leuven, Mr. Wang Luxin, Councellor of Education of the Chinese Embassy and more than 700 Belgian and Chinese students and faculty members participated.

Ambassador Zhang gave a welcome speech, reviewing the frienship and cooperation between China and Europe as well as the recent visit to Europe by Premier Wen Jiabao, also known as the "Journey of Confidence". Ambassador Zhang said that in the Year of Ox, we would collaborate to overcome the global financial and economic crisis with diligence, good luck and harmony symbolized by the Ox.

The Chinese students and scholars in Leuven performed Chinese folk songs and dances to celebrate the Spring Festival and the Chinese New Year.

[Dec. 2, 2008] Dr. C. Sidney Burrus of Rice University appointed Advisory Professor of Beijing Jiaotong University (Liu Rui reports)

President Ning and Dr. C. Sydney BurrusOn December 2, 2008, Dr. C. Sidney Burrus, Maxfield & Oshman Professor Emeritus of Engineering of the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering of the George R. Brown School of Engineering of Rice University visited Beijing Jiaotong University.

On behalf of the University, President Ning presented the certificate of Advisory Professor to Dr. C. Sidney Burrus. President Ning congratulated Dr. Shao on his great achievements in signal processing, DSP and technology in education.

Dr. C. Sidney Burrus expressed his sincere gratitude to President Ning and Beijing Jiaotong University for the kind recognition. He also gave a lecture on signal processing research development and his participation in the project Connexions to promote sharing of knowledge and education.

[Nov. 20, 2008] Beijing Jiaotong University's first Confucius Institute opens in Leuven, Belgium (Liu Rui reports)

President Ning and President De GraeveOn November 20, 2008, the opening ceremony of the joint Confucius Institute of Beijing Jiaotong University and GROUP T International University College Leuven was held in Leuven, Belgium. President Ning attended the ceremony and spoke on behalf of Beijing Jiaotong University.

As a symbol of friendship and a vehicle to promote cross-cultural understanding, the Confucius Institute connects not only the two higher educational partners, but also the two peoples of the two nations in the educational and cultural aspects.

The opening ceremony was further honored by the attendance of H.E. Mr. Zhang Yuanyuan, Ambassador of the PRC to the Kingdom of Belgium and a welcome reception hosted by Mr. Louis Tobback, Mayor of the City of Leuven in the City Hall.

The partnership between Beijing Jiaotong University and GROUP T has been long-lasting and highly productive. Their undergraduate joint international engineering program (JIEP) has produced more than 70 graduates.

[Nov. 3, 2008] Dr. Dongfang Shao of Stanford University appointed Adjunct Professor of Beijing Jiaotong University (Liu Rui reports)

President Ning and Dr. ShaoOn November 3, 2008, Dr. Dongfang Shao, Director of the East Asia Library of Standford University visited Beijing Jiaotong University.

On behalf of the University, President Ning presented the certificate of Adjunct Professor to Dr. Shao. President Ning congratulated Dr. Shao on his great achievements in library service and research on Chinese history and collection development.

Dr. Shao expressed his sincere gratitude to President Ning and Beijing Jiaotong University for the kind recognition. He also gave a lecture on American higher education and university library to the fellow BJTU librarians. According to Dr. Shao, the university library is one of the cornerstones for a university to be fully functional to deliver quality and competitive education, research and service. He also introduced about the trend of digitization in the libraries of American research universities in the Information Era.

[Aug. 26, 2008] US Secretary of Labor Elaine Chao speaks at Beijing Jiaotong University (Liu Rui reports)

US Labor Secretary Chao speaks at BJTUOn August 26, 2008, US Secretary of Labor Elaine L. Chao visited Beijing Jiaotong University and made a speech to the students of the University.

For this trip to China, the Honorable Elaine L. Chao is Head of Delegation of the US Presidential Delegation attending the Closing Ceremony of the Beijing Olympic Games on August 24, 2008.

Secretary Chao was accompnied by her father Dr. James S.C. Chao, distinguished Jiaotong alumnus, and the Honorable Clark T. Randt, Jr., US Ambassador to the PRC.

Chairman Wang Jianguo and President Ning Bin of BJTU welcomed Secretary Chao and the guests and hosted the event. Vice President Jiang Zhuangde of Xi'an Jiaotong University and Mr. Jia-Bin Duh of the Chiao Tung University Alumni Association in America (CTUAAA) attended the event.

In her speech titled "America and China in the 21st Century", the Honorable Elaine L. Chao addressed a broad range of topics, covering economic growth and labor progress, family and culture, and education and service. Known as the "favorite daughter" of the Jiaotong University, she was warmly received by a full auditorium of more than 300 audience, with many standing in the aisles. Inspired by her speech, BJTU's Chinese and international students asked questions about career development, understanding of different cultures, US-China relations, anti-trust and environmental issues, and sports, etc.

This is actually Secretary Chao's second homecoming speech at BJTU. The last one took place on April 11, 1995.

Next, Secretary Chao will visit Shanghai and make a speech at Shanghai Jiaotong University.

[Aug. 24, 2008] The 29th Olympic Games end, Beijing Jiaotong University makes contributions(Liu Rui reports)

Logo of Beijing Olympics The Beijing Olympics is known as one of the most successful Olympic Games. The "truly exceptional" Games - as IOC President Jacques Rogge said on the Closing Ceremony - were the result of collective dedication and endeavor of the Chinese people. As a national key university located in Beijing, Beijing Jiaotong University has made great contributions to the Olympic Games.

BJTU's major contributions are in the following aspects:

1) Volunteers: about 5,000 students and faculty members served as volunteers for the Olympics;

2) Infrastructure: BJTU's renowned civil engineering faculty participated in the structural design and construction of the National Outdoor Stadium (aka "Bird's Nest") and the National Aquatics Center (aka "Water Cube");

3) Green Olympics: BJTU provided key technology to the clean energy buses serving transportation between the Olympic facilities;

4) Communication: BJTU developed the integrated intelligent mobile communication for the Olympics;

5) Olympic Venues: BJTU's indoor stadium was used as Olympic training facility for volleyball games.

[May 2, 2008] Chairman Wang and President Ning meet guests from Polytechnic University, USA (Liu Rui reports)

Chairman Wang, President Ning and President Hultin, Chancellor Chang, Mr. ChengOn May 2, 2008, Chairman Wang and President Ning welcomed the delegation from Polytechnic University (New York, NY). The delegation includes Dr. Jerry Hultin, President of Polytechnic University, Dr. David Chang, Chancellor of Polytechnic University, and Mr. Ben Cheng, renowned alumni of Jiaotong University.

The partnership between Polytechnic University and Beijing Jiaotong University has been long-lasting. The two universities signed the agreement on a joint undergraduate education program following the "1-2-1" model. According to the program, Beijing Jiaotong University will select and send undergraduate students who have successfully completed their first year at BJTU to continue their second and third years at Polytechnic, after that the students will return to BJTU to finish the last year of the undergraduate studies and get bachelor's degrees of both institutions, based on well-negotiated credit cross-recognition mechanisms.

President Hultin also mentioned that Polytechnic University would soon merge with New York University and be renamed into Polytechnic Institute of NYU, which will further strengthen Poly's position as the leading science and engineering institution in the metropolitan New York as well as in the US.

[Apr. 9, 2008] Beijing Jiaotong University ranked 47th in ACM ICPC World Finals 2008 held in Banff, Canada (Liu Rui reports)

The delegation from BJTUACM ICPC (International Collegiate Programming Contest) has been known as the most competitve computer programming contest for collegiate students in the world. In 2008, the ACM ICPC World Finals was held on April 9 in Banff, Canada. This year, 6,700 teams representing 1,821 colleges and universities from 83 countries or regions of 6 continents attended the competition. However, only 100 teams won a seat in the World Finals in Banff. The team from Beijing Jiaotong University, though attending the ICPC for the first time, became one of the 100/6700.

The further breakthrough was that the team from Beijing Jiaotong University was ranked 47th as a first-timer, which was a tie with such distinguished ICPC veterans as Cornell, Duke and Indian Institute of Technology.
